Obituary of Billy Kim Lau
Billy Kim Lau, affectionately known as Kim, passed away on May 16th, 2024 at Tufts Medical Hospital. He was lovingly surrounded by his friends and family.
Kim was born on July 1, 1945, in a village town called Dongguan in Guangdong, China to Lau Sheng and Yin Lan. During wartime in China, Kim along with his mother and some siblings escaped to Hong Kong at the age of 7. Kim worked in garment factories while he grew up in Hong Kong to help support his family. He immigrated to the United States at the age of 18 and attained his U.S. citizenship afterwards. He relocated from New York to Boston, where he eventually opened his own restaurant business. Kim was a proud owner and chef of Speedy Wong’s Restaurant in Charlestown for over 35 years, where he worked hard building a life for his own family. The Speedy Wong’s Restaurant was well recognized by the Charlestown community as a cornerstone for friendships, lasting memories, and great food. He was truly loved and well-respected among the community.
Kim loved cooking and enjoyed grabbing coffee (especially at Dunkin Donuts) with family and friends. His love language was found through all of the dishes he made, so you really knew he really cared for you if you ever tasted any of his culinary creations. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling around the world. He continued to passionately cook for everyone around him.
Kim’s loving spirit is carried on by his children, Daniel Lau, Tasha Nicolosi, Diana Lau, and William Lau, along with his grandchildren Daisy Capron, Aurora Lau, and Daniel Lau Jr. Preceding him in peace were his parents, Lau Sheng and Yin Lan.
To honor Kim’s memory, a service will be held at Wing Fook Funeral home, in Boston on June 3, 2024, starting at 9:00 a.m.
